CW: violence, murder, manipulation, suicide, mind control, mutilation, child abuse, brief mention of underage prostitution
Inmate Justification: Xue Yang is responsible for massacring several small sects - some were on order's from others, but the two most notable ones were down to his own personal vendettas. He is also responsible for tricking a person who trusted him into killing innocent people, and when the truth was revealed, Xue Yang ended up driving him to suicide.
The latter is the only one of his heinous acts that he actually feels remorse for, but he has never regretted his actions before so he's in heavy denial.
In addition, he has also committed acts of torture, necromancy, physical assault and pettier crimes such as stealing and vandalism.
Arrival: Xue Yang was brought in against his will and knowledge.
Abilities/Powers: Xue Yang at full strength has skills in martial arts, sword fighting and most importantly - demonic cultivation. He has some skills in regular cultivation too, but much prefers the demonic path. With demonic cultivation he can raise the dead and control them to make them fight for him. He's also well-versed in different kind of poisons. He has a sword named Jiangzai.
Before he was killed, his right arm was severed. Along with his missing sword arm, his spiritual powers and cultivation will be sealed on the Barge. He will also not have access to his weapons or other items he could use to cause trouble.
Inmate Information:
Xue Yang was orphaned at a young age, so young that he has no memories of his parents. If he ever did, they're long gone now. He grew up on the streets of a town called Kuizhou, and despite his circumstances he was a sweet and rather naive kid until a certain incident when he was seven.
He'd been staring longingly at some candy in the window of a store when he was approached by a man who he would later find out was a cultivator and a sect leader named Chang Ci'an. He asked him to deliver a letter to another man, in exchange for a bag of candy. Xue Yang happily agreed, but unfortunately, the man he delivered the letter to was an enemy of Chang Ci'an's, and without the other man to take his anger out on - he beat Xue Yang up.
When Xue Yang returned to try and find Chang Ci'an, he found that he was gone. He searched for him until he found him about to take off in a carriage. Xue Yang climbed the carriage, begging for the candy he'd been promised, but Chang Ci'an hit him in the face with a whip. When the carriage left, one of its wheels ran over Xue Yang's hand, breaking all of his fingers and grinding his pinky into a pulp. There was no saving that finger.
This was an incredibly fundamental event in Xue Yang's life, one that would come to shape the rest of his life. It taught him that he was completely disposable in the eyes of those who had more than him, that people with power could do whatever they pleased to someone with none and get away with it. This world view would stay with him for the rest of his life as he rarely saw or experienced anything to contradict it. He learned that the world was unfair and that the only way to get ahead was to become strong enough that no one could hurt you.
And so, he worked on getting stronger. He was interested in cultivation, but that was a pretty out of reach goal for a street kid. He instead taught himself to get good at stealing and pick-pocketing. He would sometimes sell his body when desperate enough, but mostly he made his living off of stealing from shops, pick-pocketing and mugging people. In his teens he had become known for his delinquency. He had no friends because he trusted no one, he always carried a knife and slept with one eye open. Physically he grew stronger and taller and got good at intimidating people, and if that didn't work he had no issues getting physical.
Xue Yang is self-taught in a lot of things. Despite what one might think, he is actually quite intelligent and clever. He taught himself how to read and write, and he started experimenting with talismans in his teens. Without spiritual powers at the time, he had to get creative. He heard whispers about demonic cultivation and it intrigued him. He started experimenting with it, and that was how he caught the attention of the Wen sect.
He was recruited by them and was taught both regular cultivation and the demonic path. He preferred the latter, taking to it like a duck to water. He forged his sword, Jiangzai, while with the Wen.
He was on occasion sent to do things like wipe out smaller sects who had offended the Wen in some way, and Xue Yang used that as an opportunity to test out new talismans and other demonic tricks.
It was the massacres of these smaller sects that first caught the attention of a cultivator named Xiao Xingchen.
Xue Yang had a goal in mind - and that was to wipe out the entire Chang sect. Revenge for how their former sect leader had crushed his hand as a child. The man responsible had died before Xue Yang could get his hands on him, so his entire bloodline would have to pay instead.
Xiao Xingchen finally caught up with him after he had massacred the Chang. He was arrested and left with the proper authorities. He was imprisoned, but was freed by one Meng Yao who figured that Xue Yang would be more use alive.
Eventually, he was recruited by Meng Yao, now Jin Guangyao, into the Jin sect. During this time, Xiao Xingchen tried fruitlessly to get justice for the Chang, something that pissed Xue Yang off. He didn't like his business being meddled in and decided to teach Xiao Xingchen a very painful lesson.
Instead of directly going after Xiao Xingchen, Xue Yang attacked his friend Song Lan's home - massacring his entire sect. When Song Lan showed up, Xue Yang threw poisonous powder into his eyes that blinded him, and told him that he had done this because of Xiao Xingchen.
Xue Yang stayed with Jin sect for a few years after that, but eventually he had outlived his usefulness with them after he aided Jin Guangyao in the murder of his father. Xue Yang realized what was about to happen and fled, but not fast enough. Men were sent after him and he was caught. He was brutally beaten and stabbed, and then left for dead in a ditch by the side of the road.
When waking up he found himself in an abandoned coffin home with Xiao Xingchen tending to his wounds. He quickly realized that Xiao Xingchen was now blind and had no idea who he was. Present was also a blind girl named A-Qing who Xiao Xingchen had picked up earlier.
Of course he had to take advantage of that fact.
He ended up tricking Xiao Xingchen into killing a bunch of innocent villagers by using corpse poisoning powder on them (which would make them appear as living corpses - something that Xiao Xingchen's sword could sense) and cutting their tongues out.
Then followed three years of, essentially, domestic bliss. At some point, Xue Yang stopped tricking Xiao Xingchen into killing innocents. He lost sight of his revenge scheme thanks to Xiao Xingchen's unconditional kindness (something he had never experienced before), and began to genuinely enjoy being around him. He became, in essence, domesticated.
The most fundamental thing that started to change his disposition towards Xiao Xingchen was after he had told part of the story with Chang Ci'an (leaving out identifying details of course) and in response to hearing about this little kid who just wanted candy, but was abused for it, Xiao Xingchen started to leave candies on Xue Yang's pillow every night. No one had ever shown that kind of thoughtfulness, that sort of kindness to him without expecting anything in return. They never talked about it, but it meant the world to Xue Yang.
It wasn't meant to last however.
One day, Song Lan appeared in the coffin town. He confronted Xue Yang after seeing him with Xiao Xingchen. A fight ensued, angry words were exchanged, Xue Yang managed to knock Song Lan off his game enough to use the same corpse poison trick on him, as well as cut his tongue out. Then Xiao Xingchen descended to strike the killing blow - having no idea that he had just killed his best friend.
As it turned out, A-Qing wasn't actually blind and had witnessed the whole thing. She told Xiao Xingchen as soon as she could and he confronted Xue Yang.
A devastating screaming match ensued. Xue Yang told the rest of his childhood trauma story, hoping that Xiao Xingchen would understand him, but he didn't. He called Xue Yang "disgusting", a word that felt like betrayal. And what does Xue Yang do when he feels hurt? Betrayed? Judged? He lashes out. He gets cruel. He told Xiao Xingchen everything he had tricked him into doing, told him how he had just killed Song Lan. He laughed at Xiao Xingchen's despair, up until Xiao Xingchen took his sword and slit his own throat with it.
Xue Yang was immediately devastated. He hadn't actually wanted Xiao Xingchen to die! He had only wanted to protect the life he had in Yi City, the life he had come to cherish. Xiao Xingchen's death was not part of the equation, not at all.
He attempted to resurrect Xiao Xingchen only to find that his soul had shattered so thoroughly that he couldn't. He flew into a fit of despair and rage, he screamed threats at Xiao Xingchen's lifeless body before breaking down crying.
What followed was 8 years of Xue Yang trying in vain to resurrect Xiao Xingchen. He was obsessed and mad with grief. His only company was Song Lan - who he had turned into a living corpse puppet who was forced to obey him. He had also tracked down A-Qing and in a fit of rage, cut her tongue out, blinded her and thrown corpse poison on her to turn her into a living dead.
Xue Yang also devised a way to disguise himself as Xiao Xingchen, which he used to gain people's trust. He also used Xiao Xingchen's sword during this time. In his desperation, he even reached out to Jin Guangyao and helped him in exchange for help with bringing Xiao Xingchen back. That failed too, however.
After 8 years, Xue Yang's hopes were piqued again when Wei Wuxian came to Yi City. A renowned demonic cultivator who had inspired Xue Yang, he believed that if anyone could bring Xiao Xingchen back to life, it would be him. Wei Wuxian wasn't very interested in helping however and then told him what Xue Yang deep down already knew - that the soul was too damaged to save because Xiao Xingchen didn't want to live.
Eventually, Xue Yang was defeated. He was stabbed multiple times and even had his right arm severed. The killing blow was given to him by Song Lan who had been freed from Xue Yang's mind control.
Path to Redemption: Xue Yang is going to be resistant to having a warden and is likely going to be very uncooperative. A warden with a great deal of patience would therefore be ideal as he's not going to be easy to get through to. He has a very cynical world view that he is unwilling to let go of. He believes that people are generally selfish and only out for themselves and it's going to be hard to convince him otherwise.
The ideal warden for Xue Yang would be someone patient and non-judgemental who isn't easily provoked. Someone who is willing to give him a chance to better himself, even after he shows his cruelest, ugliest sides. Xue Yang has a deep-seeded belief that no one could possibly truly accept him if they knew everything about him and what happened between him and Xiao Xingchen just reinforced that belief.
He is likely going to provoke, insult and potentially even try to hurt a warden in order to push them away, to show them that he's an irredeemable monster and that they should just give up on him, and to reinforce his own world view: that people can't be trusted.
He needs a warden who is secure in themself, who will listen to him and push back when needed - without getting into a screaming match over it. He will react very negatively to anything he perceives as pity, or like he's being patronized.
Things Xue Yang needs to work on in order to graduate (not necessarily a comprehensive list - this man is deeply fucked up):
• Emotional regulation / anger management: Xue Yang tends to react with anger when he feels hurt, betrayed, vulnerable, judged and/or exposed. In the past this has often lead to terrible violence and/or cruelty from his side. Xue Yang often knows exactly which buttons to push to get other people to crumble. He needs to learn healthier outlets for his emotions.
• Feelings in general tbh: Xue Yang is no good, very bad, absolutely terrible at recognizing his own feelings. Things like fear, grief and sadness tend to translate into anger instead. Positive emotions like love and happiness tend to just confuse him. He needs help to recognize what he's feeling, why he's feeling it and how to deal with it.
• Obsessive nature: Since he'll be arriving to the Barge still in the throes of his obsessive madness over Xiao Xingchen's death, he is going to be quite obsessed with and fixated on him. He needs help examining his feelings about Xiao Xingchen, about his death and the leading role he played in everything.
• Trust issues: Due to his childhood and life experiences in general, any trust from Xue Yang is going to be very hard-won.
• World view: As mentioned above, Xue Yang has a very negative and cynical world view. He's not entirely wrong in having that view either, as he has been very unfairly treated and has suffered all manner of abuse growing up. The problem is that he has only continued the cycle of violence and let hate and rage become his defining characteristics. He needs help to see that things aren't so black and white.
